Information on waste collections

The collection and disposal of household refuse accounts for more than half your annual rates bill but is issued as a separate bill to all householders.  The amount will vary slightly each year as the applied for this item in the annual Remède (budget) is the actual cost of collection and disposal - there are no “reserves” being accumulated.

Please do not leave bags out on any day other than your collection day to avoid bags being torn open by cats and seagulls which then encourages rats into your area.

The contractor will not take broken sacks - nor will they clear up any spillage so the cost of clear up falls to the ratepayers and call-outs are expensive. It is the responsibility of the householder to ensure that their refuse is offered for collection in a fit state and re-bag it, if necessary.

If your waste has not been collected contact the parish office at constables@stpeterport.gg

You can help by observing the following guidelines, please:

  • do NOT put refuse out earlier than the night before collection.
  • if bags become split, clear up and re-bag.
  • dustbins or sacks should not be heavier than one man can lift to shoulder height.
  • ensure that if dustbins are used, it is safe to handle without broken handles or edges.
  • ensure that, if sacks are used, they are of sufficient strength to contain the rubbish. Plastic bin liners, carrier bags or cardboard boxes are NOT approved containers and will not be collected.
  • check back here or on Social Media for any changes over Bank Holidays.
  • cardboard must be bagged up in clear recycling bags for collection, larger items unable to be bagged up can be taken to the Household Waste and Recycling Centre at Longue Hougue (info on opening times can be found at Waste & Recycling - States of Guernsey).
  • green waste can be home composted or taken to the household green waste site at Chouet (info on opening times can be found at Waste sites opening times - States of Guernsey).
  • when a road is closed – please try to be aware that there may be difficulties of access when roads are closed. You can help us by taking sacks to whichever end of the road is nearest your property. Please phone the office for advice should you require it.

If you have any queries, or you are unsure of the collection days for your area, please contact our office on 720014 or e-mail: constables@stpeterport.gg

We would encourage all parishioners to consider recycling of newspapers, bottles, tins, jars and cardboard whenever you can, or if it is possible for you to do so.

Finally, it is an offence to place rubbish on a public highway OTHER than on a normal collection time. Offenders are reported to the Police. A few convictions might deter others from putting out their refuse too early or from abandoning it on a public highway.

PLEASE BE AWARE AND HELP US TO TRY TO KEEP THE PARISH CLEAN AND TIDY.
