The Old Quarter Sign back in place on Mill Street

Wed 12 Mar 2025

Taken down in January, and under the watchful eye of Douzenier and parish Groundskeeper Chris Inder, the sign has been restored, repainted and returned to Mill Street by contractors Siteweld, where it looks very eye-catching in its new brightly painted coat of blue and gold.

The Guernsey Press came down to see the new sign being put into place and spoke with Constables Diane Mitchell and Ken Acott pictured below with other members of the douzaine and parish staff. Also pictured are some of the commercial inhabitants of Mill Street and the staff from Siteweld who completed the works for us.

We realize it's a small thing but we have to start somewhere. We are all more than aware of the number of empty buildings up there but there are always some wonderful businesses and it is up to everybody in Guernsey to make the effort to walk a little further for their coffee and browse a few of the antique shops and art galleries in the area. It needs life. Our islanders are that life.

Some photographs of the sign going back up on March 9th and of when it came down on a damp day in January. Go and have a look! And have a coffee from The Pelican whilst you are there. It really is excellent coffee!!
